How Much Does a Logo Cost for a Small Business? (2026 Guide)
A logo can cost anything from nothing to over $10,000. Here's what you actually get at each price, what a professional logo should include, and why a cheap logo often costs more later.

Short answer: In 2026, a logo can cost anything from nothing to over $10,000. AI generators and DIY tools run $0–$100. Logo marketplaces and design contests run about $100–$1,000. An experienced freelance designer typically charges $300–$2,500, and a full branding agency starts around $3,000 and can pass $10,000. Most small businesses get the best value from an experienced independent designer or a monthly design plan.
The price is only half the story, though. What matters is what you get for it, and whether your logo still works when you put it on a sign, a shirt or a social post.
Logo design costs at a glance
| Option | Typical cost | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| AI logo generators | Free–$100 | Instant concepts from a prompt. No strategy, and the licensing terms vary. |
| DIY tools (Canva and similar) | Free–$50 | You edit a template. Others can use the same template. |
| Marketplaces and design contests | $100–$1,000 | Many quick concepts. Quality and ownership rights vary widely. |
| Freelance designer | $300–$2,500 | An original mark, several versions, vector files and usage rights. |
| Small design studio | $1,000–$2,500+ | More concepts, more refinement and basic brand guidelines. |
| Branding agency | $3,000–$10,000+ | Research, positioning, a full identity system and complete guidelines. |
Ranges compiled from 2026 industry pricing guides, including ManyPixels and 4over4. Prices in Metro Detroit fall in the same national ranges, since most designers now work remotely.
What changes the price of a logo
- Originality. A template or AI-generated mark is cheap because it isn't unique. A custom mark takes research and sketching, then refinement.
- How many versions you need. A real logo comes as a set: a horizontal version, a stacked version, an icon for social profiles, and one-color and reversed versions.
- Files and rights. Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) scale to any size without blurring. Written ownership means the logo is legally yours.
- Brand system. Colors, fonts and guidelines that keep your website, menus, signs and social posts consistent cost more than a logo alone, and they're worth more too.
- Experience. A designer with years of real projects behind them makes fewer costly mistakes and gets you to a strong result faster.
What a professional logo should include
Whatever you pay, make sure you walk away with:
- Vector master files (AI, EPS or SVG), not just a PNG or JPG
- Several layouts: horizontal, stacked and an icon
- Color versions: full color, one color, black, and white for dark backgrounds
- Color codes for print and screen (CMYK, RGB and HEX)
- Basic usage rules: spacing, minimum size, and what not to do
- Ownership in writing
If a quote doesn't include these, it isn't cheaper, just unfinished.
The hidden cost of a cheap logo
AI and template logos look fine on a phone screen. The problems show up when you try to use them for real. They blur on a storefront sign, fall apart when embroidered on a hat, or don't print cleanly on a business card. Many are also flat image files that can't be resized or edited.
That's what happened with Daclubhouse Sports Memorabilia. Their logo started as an AI-generated image. Forbes Design rebuilt it as a clean vector brand system that scales, prints and embroiders without breaking. Fixing a logo later almost always costs more than doing it right the first time.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a small business spend on a logo?
For most small businesses, $300–$2,500 with an experienced independent designer is the right range. Spend less and you risk a logo you'll have to replace. Spend more and you're usually paying for agency research and strategy that a new business may not need yet.
Can I use an AI-generated logo for my business?
You can, but check the licensing terms, and know that AI logos are usually low-resolution images, not vector files. Many businesses start with an AI concept and then have a designer rebuild it properly, as Daclubhouse did.
How long does logo design take?
Typically one to three weeks, depending on how many concepts and revision rounds are involved.
Do I own my logo when it's finished?
You should, in writing. Always confirm that the final files and copyright transfer to you. At Forbes Design, you own your final logo and brand files.
